Ok, interesting question: why do we respond the way we do to bugs. I'm still not quite sure how much of me not squishing them is from the fact that it's a lot easier to trap them than clean up after them, and how much is from other aspects of being a city kid. Opinions?
Oh, and if you don't get the title, my ME 380 project (nut sorter) is the closest I've come to making a robot. If you still don't get it, you haven't read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? recently enough.

Speaking as a long time "city-slicker", I have to say that you may be looking in completely the wrong place for your motivation. I squish, trap and release bugs more or less randomly, with the exception of when there is a convenient Venus Fly Trap on hand, in which case I inevitably try to trap and feed to the 'lions'. Have to say, there are times I really empathize with those Romans.
Honestly, how much more work is it to clean up? I mean, a really juicy bug is a bit of effort, but your average housefly doesn't leave any residue if you kill it right. And chasing those buggers down (pun intended) is a lot of work. Normally I try to catch spiders, but unless you want to go to the effort of getting a glass and all, keeping them from crawling off your hand and disappearing is just too troublesome at times. Never really considered this a "city" versus "country" sort of thing.

And the specific incident which sparked this involved a hitchhiker which showed up on the bus with me. Now, I know that odds aren't really great for the bug if I move it like that, so if I've convinced myself that I'm doing it for the bug's sake I'm really out of touch, however I might be doing it to ensure that the birds have enough food...
